MS 138 is a casebound volume measuring 330 x 214 mm. Wittgenstein has included dates between 15 January and 20 May 1949 in the text. The binding is red buckram quarter bound with red leather and has a mutilated label reading ‘Manuscript Volume ‘Band S” Jan 1949 - March 19… Oxford’ and ‘RED. 1-9 II’ in red crayon below. Internally, there are two card flyleaves at the front and back and 142 leaves, each ruled with 38 lines with a double red line at the top of the page and 2 vertical red lines to the left of the page and 4 to the right. The volume has been foliated ff. 1-143 by the printer using a stamp and ff. 1-144 by another hand. Ff. 34 onwards are blank.

The text is in German with some coded remarks, written in pen with blue and blue/black inks. Openings 19 and 20 have rust stains from paper clips and on opening 30 two slips are attached to the page to cover coded remarks.
