MS 166 is a hardback pocket notebook measuring 165 x 106 mm. The binding consists of light brown fabric over card and there is a large label on the front cover bearing a note by the literary executors and the reference ‘Sheet 4, 32’. The front pastedown has a bookseller’s stamp reading ‘Heffers and Sons Ltd, Stationers, Cambridge’. Internally there are front and rear flyleaves and 48 leaves each ruled with 20 lines The volume is foliated ff. 1-47, though the leaf between f. 20 and f. 21 is unnumbered, having been missed in the foliation. Folios 32v to 43r are left blank. Folios 43v to 47 have been used upside down and back to front and contain poems in Russian. The text is in English and Russian and is written with pencil and a pen using blue/black ink.
