MS 170 is a pocket notebook measuring 162 x 100 mm labelled ‘Notebook No 3’. The binding consists of brown fabric on board with a black spine and had probably been rebound at some point. Part of a label affixed by the literary executors remains on the front cover and bears the reference ‘Sheet 4, 57’. Internally, there are front and rear flyleaves and 78 leaves measuring 161 x 99 mm, each ruled with 20 lines, foliated ff. 1-78 by a hand other than Wittgenstein’s. Ff. 6-78 are blank. The text is in German and written in pencil and pen using blue/black ink.
