MS 175 is a pocket notebook measuring 161 x 98 mm marked ‘Notebook No 1’ on the front endpaper. Wittgenstein has included dates between 23 September 1950 and 21 March 1951 in the text. The binding consists of black buckram and is sewn, which may be a later addition. Internally, there are front and rear flyleaves and 78 leaves ruled with 19 lines each page and foliated ff. 1-78. The text is in German and written in pen using blue ink.

The volume was damaged by conservation work and parts of folios 37, 41 and 61 are illegible. Photographic copies of these folios taken before the damage occurred are kept with the volume in Trinity College Library.
