“But don't you talk as though (the) pain wasn't something terribly real?” – Am I to understand this as a proposition about pain? I suppose it is a proposition about the use of the word ‘pain’; & it is one more expression, || utterance, an essential part of the surrounding in which we use the word ‘pain’.
